Youssef Chahine, the celebrated Arab filmmaker, has died, aged 82, in Cairo.

After undergoing surgery on July 17 for a brain haemorrhage, Chahine slipped into a coma which lasted six weeks.

He was being treated in the Maadi military hospital in south Cairo when he died.

Chahine received the lifetime achievement award in the Cannes film festival in 1997.

The Egyptian director, best known for his series of films linked to the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, made his first film in 1950.

Since then he has been recognised as a pioneer in Egypt's film industry and a distinguished figure in the Arab world.
