Typhoon Fung Wong made landfall on the island's east coast on Monday morning, packing winds of up to 167kmh. Taiwan's stock market was closed for the day along with all schools and offices and all rail traffic was halted. All domestic flights and 56 international flights were cancelled, but no casualties have so far been reported as a result of the storm. Television footage showed rescue personnel wading through waist-deep waters to rescue people from their homes in Hualien in eastern Taiwan, where the typhoon made landfall. Fung Wong hit Taiwan just a week after tropical storm Kalmaegi killed 19 people and left six others missing on the island. The island is frequently hit by tropical storms and typhoons between July and September, often causing casualties in mountainous regions prone to landslides and flash floods. Fung-Wong may reach China's Fujian province on Tuesday.
