Birth control is abortion? | Print |  E-mail
By Shahram Vahdany
Health-care workers in the US may soon be able to refuse to perform abortions or prescribe birth-control methods they consider objectionable.

The Department of Health and Human Services has been asked by the Bush administration to review a draft regulation that would deny federal funding to any hospital or clinic that does not allow employees to opt out of participating in care that runs against their personal convictions.

The regulation would include the provision of birth-control pills, IUDs and the Plan B emergency contraceptive.

Conservative groups say the initiative is to safeguard doctors and other health workers who are not able to pursue their beliefs or refuse services they find abhorrent.

The draft proposal has already brought forth a torrent of criticism from family planning advocates and women's health activists.

The proposal is outlined in a 39-page draft regulation that has been circulated among several health agencies.

The FDA has not yet objected, but several members have expressed serious concerns.

Treating the Pill as Abortion
Healthcare workers have no right to refuse treatment on so called "religious" grounds. They do their god damned job or they can go find another job, the self righteous bastards do not have the righ to impose their stupid beliefs on others and they are no better than people refusing service to different races on "religious grounds" and in fact the exact same argument they are making right now can be used to support not only allowing racism ie no help for interracial couples, other races, but actually REQUIRE hospitals to allow it? Exact same argument. Do your job or be fired!!! Just imagine if everyone refused service for whatever reason they felt like? Can I refuse service to people because they are conservative, or military, or any other reason that puts them in opposition to what I believe in? It is STUPID. And to require it? FIRE THEM. You don't want to fill prescriptions? Dont work in a pharmacy. Like going to work for an abortion clinic and then refusing to do abortions and expecting to keep the job. A vegatarian working at Mcdonalds and refusing to serve burgers or anything with any grease like fries, and saying don't fire me? This is not even debatable, this is one of many things going on in america that are not debatable in the tiniest way yet are somehow actually happening.

Another side effect of unlawful govt. in
The federal government has no constitutional authority to subsidize pro- or anti-abortion measures in the first place. Roe v. Wade, though seen as a liberating measure, is unconstitutional and unnecessary if our government would only follow the Constitution (stay out of our wallets and our bedrooms). This is a philosophy upon which both "libs" and "cons" can easily agree. If we don't like this constitutional restraint on government coercion, then we should amend it. Don't take from 100% of the people to subsidize something only a small percentage would ever take part in.

Flower, you have a good point too. The government has NO BUSINESS interfering with private work contracts. If an employer wants to fire someone for insubordination or whatever reason, so be it. The feds should not be busting up the workplace over someone's personal beliefs.
