A UN war crimes judge has entered a plea of "not guilty" to war crimes charges for Radovan Karadzic, the former Bosnian Serb leader, after he refused to file his own plea.

Karadzic made his second appearance before the International Criminal Tribunal on Friday but refused to enter pleas to the 11 charges of genocide and crimes against humanity brought against him.

Karadzic has challenge the legality of his pending genocide trial and he told the court this lay behind his refusal to enter a plea.

"I am deeply convinced this court has an aim to liquidate me. I have stopped using a false name so I think all parties should do the same," he said.

He faces charges over a campaign of "ethnic cleansing" during the 1992-95 Bosnian war in which 100,000 people died.

Since his arrest, he has urged the UN court to order evidence from Richard Holbrooke, a former US diplomat, about an alleged secret deal.

Karadzic claims that Holbrooke had promised him that he would not face prosecution at the end of Bosnia's war if he disappeared from the public eye.

Holbrooke, the architect of the Dayton peace agreement that ended the war, denies cutting such a deal and has described Karadzic as the "intellectual architect" of racial hatred in former Yugoslavia.

"Of all the evil men of the Balkans, he is the worst," he said.

Karadzic, who was arrested last month, in Belgrade, is to face the war crimes tribunal next on September 17.
