Black Monday | | Howard Kunstler |
The first thing I thought of when I read the headlines with the news of the demise of Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch was, what would Howard Kunstler have to say about all this? I didn't see Stephanopolous' interview with Greenspan on Sunday and am so happy to have missed it. These days even the sight of that clueless old fool is enough to send my blood pressure (normally, surprisingly low for my advanced years) into a stratospheric inflationary spiral. "The so-called "financial industry" turned out to be most earnestly devoted to the production of complex swindles." -J.H. Kunstler Yes, let us not forget the lesson the Bush administration has taught us in only eight, surprisingly brief, catastrophic years: The only product of this swindle, the only goal of this swindle, was the consumption of our seed crop for the fun and profit of this small subset of greedheads. The seed crop metaphor here being: every aspect of our society and culture capable of generating what can be described, in antique nomenclature, as "The Common": the environment, our educational system, The Unions, our infrastructure, the most awesome industrial base in the known universe, all the regulatory and benevolent aspects of government, our national security and even our assumed birthright of Habeas Corpus, and the Bill of Rights. - And not even our consumption of said seed crop but their consumption of it while the American people starved. The Repugs are "the Party that wrecked America." -J.H.K. Yes, I only wish he had credited Thomas Frank's book "The Wrecking Crew" that establishes the bona fides for this moniker in spades.I intend to get all my fellow Obama volunteers, laboring in the vineyard of the campaign, to read this article. It will go a long way toward putting the fire back in the belly of the Democratic Party rank & file. Regardless how hot or cold you may blow on Obama or no matter that you may hold the Democrats in part responsible, by omission, for the pending disaster(s), they are our only hope at this time and in this place. And the alternative is something no sane person dare even contemplate. These Republicans "…can't just swindle and loot a society and walk away with the swag." -J.H.K. Palin (and her vestigial appendage, McCain) needs to hear this with a resounding fury on November 4th!No Peace for these bastards! But Peace unto the rest of you,
