ImageAt least 37 miners have died after inhaling gas in an explosion at a coal mine near the city of Dengfeng in central China, state media has reported.

Xinhua, the state news agency, said that 108 miners had been underground at the time of the accident on Saturday.

Sixty-four miners escaped after the blast and seven others were rescued, the report said.

The incident came hours after at least five miners died in a fire in a coal mine in northeastern China.

Twenty-six people are missing after the incident in the city of Hegang in Heilongjiang province, the official China News Service reported.

Accidents in China's mines are a regular occurrence, with safety standards often ignored in drive to meet the country's demand for coal.

Nearly 3,800 people died in Chinese coal mines last year, according to official figures.

Independent analysts say the figure could be much higher as some accidents go unreported to the authorities.
