McCain Again Calls Bin Laden a 'Freedom Fighter' by Chris Edelson When you say the same thing twice, it’s no longer a gaffe, it’s clearly something you believe is correct. So, perhaps someone will ask McCain why he has now said, twice, that Osama Bin Laden was a “freedom fighter.” As I wrote after the first debate, McCain praised what he called the “freedom fighters” in Afghanistan who drove the Soviets out in the 1980s Those “noble patriots” included in their ranks Osama Bin Laden and Zayman Al Zawahiri. Last night, he said the same thing, declaring that “the Afghan freedom fighters drove the Russians out of Afghanistan.” Wolf Blitzer, Andrea Mitchell, Chris Matthews–McCain is daring you now. He’s saying: you people in the traditional media are either unwilling or incapable of calling me out on this whopper. Let’s see if he’s right. Chris Edelson is a lawyer in Washington, D.C. who writes frequently about current political and legal issues. His writing has previously been published in The Philadelphia Inquirer, Metroland (Albany, NY) and at commondreams.org.
