At least 17 people have been injured after a car bomb exploded in a car park near the University of Navarre in the northern Spanish city of Pamplona, a regional government official said.

The blast on Thursday morning  followed two bomb attacks blamed on Basque separatists in the nearby Basque Country on the weekend.

An unnamed witness told Spanish state radio the bomb smashed windows in a university building and left several cars on fire.

"It was a very strong explosion, very powerful,'' said Amaya Zaratiegui, a spokeswoman for the university's clinic.

She said she could see the smoke from her office, which is several hundred
metres from the parking lot.

Spanish national radio said the bomb was apparently timed to go off at a busy period when many students and faculty were walking across the campus and that there was major property damage from the blast.
