At least 24 people are believed to have died after an Indonesian military plane crashed into an airport in West Java, an air force spokesman said.

The plane, which crashed in stormy weather on Monday, was carrying six crew, an instructor and 17 special forces trainees.

An air force spokesman said the cause of the crash remained unknown.

Witnesses told the Antara state news agency that the Fokker-27, which was said to be over three decades old, was shaking before erupting into a giant fireball upon impact.

Accidents are not uncommon to the Indonesian military's fleet of aircraft consisting of ageing planes.
