Two police officers have been killed in a car bomb blast near a civil guards barracks on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

Spanish media reported that several people were also injured in the blast, which occured in the tourist area of the town Calvia.

"Two civil guard officers who were in an official vehicle were killed in an explosion," a spokeswoman for the civil guards said.

The attack comes a day after a similar attack hit northern Spain, which authorities blamed on Eta, a Basque separatist group.

Police have closed all airport and seaports on Mallorca following Thursday's blast, in an attempt to track down those behind the attack.

The regional interior ministry said it had stopped ships and planes from leaving the island "to avoid the escape of the terrorists".

Local media have said the blast carried the hallmarks of Eta, which traditionally targets civil guards.

The bomb exploded near Palma de Majorca, the capital of the Balearic Islands, which is a popular tourist destination.

On Wednesday a car bomb outside a police barracks in Burgos, in Spain's north, injured about 46 people and blowing the face of the building.

Eta will mark the 50th anniversary of its founding on Friday. It is blamed for the deaths of more than 820 people over the past 40 years.
