I just finished Matt Taibbi's Rolling Stone piece, The Great American Bubble Machine

I found it a truly amazing piece of journalism - something that ought to be on the required reading list of every voter - every taxpayer.  Perhaps most shocking of all, quite apart from the unmitigated greed and psychopathology of the Goldmanite bankers, is the subterfuge, acquiescence and the complete lack of moral courage of nearly all our public regulatory officials and our elected representatives.

None of them, it seems, has ever read the Constitution or their job descriptions or taken either of them seriously.  More disturbing even than the disgusting behavior of Wall Street and their Congressional enablers is the complete docility of the Amerikan sheeple.  Somebody should just distribute bars of soap and ask them all to step into the shower.  To a man and woman, they would do it without question.

Cap-and-trade is going to happen. Or, if it doesn't, something like it will. The moral is the same as for all the other bubbles that Goldman helped create, from 1929 to 2009. In almost every case, the very same bank that behaved recklessly for years, weighing down the system with toxic loans and predatory debt, and accomplishing nothing but massive bonuses for a few bosses, has been rewarded with mountains of virtually free money and government guarantees - while the actual victims in this mess, ordinary taxpayers, are the ones paying for it.

It's not always easy to accept the reality of what we now routinely allow these people to get away with; there's a kind of collective denial that kicks in when a country goes through what America has gone through lately, when a people lose as much prestige and status as we have in the past few years. You can't really register the fact that you're no longer a citizen of a thriving first-world democracy, that you're no longer above getting robbed in broad daylight, because like an amputee, you can still sort of feel things that are no longer there.

- Matt Taibbi

I frankly hope the Congressional Democrats strip away even the last vestige of any public health component from the Healthcare Reform (sic) package.  Do you think then the great unwashed might wake up to how the game is rigged? Doubtful.

We don't deserve universal heath care.  Our children should know the real extent of what is means to grow up under the boot of an unbridled Capitalist government.  Our children deserve to grow up poor, frightened, stupid and sick.  This is the birthright their cowardly parents have bequeathed them.  God Bless Amerika!

Peace,

That's very articulate and quite correct. And, as I've said and I've even read/heard others say, America will never be the same after the last administration. Not to mention that we seem to be living in the age of corporate america, Not our grandfathers America. How sad for future generations :(null

The nature of the beast
Bob,

While you & Taibbi correctly see many of the problems, you misdiagnose the ailment. We live in a mixed economy not a capitalist one. What we have today more resembles fascism.

Regulators are there to screw the public. They are controlled by the special interests, it's always been that way & always will. Good regulators are like Nessie, many belive in her but nobody's ever seen her.
