The Brownshirts Are Coming- The Brownshirts Are Coming!

“Conservative critics of President Barack Obama's plan for health care reform are demanding town hall forums across the country, because they want to give members of Congress — particularly Democrats who support the president — an earful of why they think it is a bad idea. Several town halls in other states have become instant YouTube classics, with shouting, angry mobs humiliating congressmen. For the Democrats, it smells like a set-up by conservative advocacy groups such as Americans for Prosperity and FreedomWorks. Democrats say these groups are trying to torpedo meaningful health care reform.”

Miami Herald Aug 8, 2009

ImageThe depth and perversity of my cynicism knows no bounds these days.  Only past experience gives me reason to believe that, in the words of Lilly Tomlin, “No matter how cynical you become, you can never keep up.”

I am floating this idea past only a couple of my most progressive, most broadminded friends.  This theory, which I devoutly hope is only the product of an overworked imagination born of reading too many declassified CIA & FBI reports, holds out the possibility that all this GOP brownshirt nonsense may indeed be a weird kind of false-flag operation engineered (or at least encouraged) by Obama himself.

Follow me now on this tortured scenario and see if any of this makes sense:

Over the past nine months there has been more and more of a mass desertion by the very people whose support was essential to Obama’s successful election.  Progressives and many moderates are jumping ship in massive numbers over energy policy, the Wall Street bailout, health care, the wars, Honduras, etc, etc.   “What to do? What to do?”  Obama must be asking himself.

Wouldn’t it be so convenient to have the appearance of a mass movement of frothing rabid right-wingers arise against him and his weak, compromised, middle of the road policies?  In the face of such a barbarian hoard, two wonderful advantages might just accrue.  First would be a solidifying of his base and the temporary return of progressive support against such a malevolent threat.  Second would be a possible, palpable excuse to abandon even the last vestiges of progressive policy on the grounds that we must do so to preserve the peace.

We all know where Obama’s heart truly is.  It is with the big insurance companies, the pharmaceuticals, the thieves at Goldman Sachs, the war machine, coal and nuclear.  All these interests mitigate directly against his promised “mandate” for change.  Wouldn’t it be nice if he could have his cake and eat it too? —to be able to say “I tried but was beaten down by overwhelming, reactionary forces beyond my control.”

This theory seems extreme, even bizarre, stretching credibility to the breaking point.  Can I be right?  History is full of just such wild ideas that later were proven true—after it was too late.

Peace,

In reality, the new Brownshirts are, and have always been, the Democratic Party. Nice try at the attempted spinning transference though.

Nothing like the Left trying to constantly silence the Right either through attempted marginalization or end-all "fairness act."

Those old coots giving hell at townhall meeting are your grandmothers and grandfathers. And unlike the disrectful Left, the Right happen to love and appreciate their grandmothers and grandfathers and we don't consider them MOBS or "Brownshirts"....

That was certainly a fast response. Congratulations!

I would be interested in the association Herr Null makes between the Brownshrits and the Democratic Party. Unfortunately He does not offer any explanation for this bizarre comparison either by way of the Democratic Party's actions or ideology.

Of course everyone knows (perhaps with the exception of Herr Null) The Brownshirts were the infamous SA who helped Hitler’s rise to power by cracking the skulls of those dissidents they could not shout down at his early Town Hall meetings. The Brownshirts and their Italian cousins, the Blackshirts have always been associated with the fascist right- never to my knowledge with the Democratic Party. National Socialism has always stood for anti-Semitism. National Socialism represents the antithesis of democracy, socialism, neo-Marxism and all things the progressives in the Democratic Party have to some extent traditionally embraced—just the opposite of the Republican extreme right.

One thing I think the Left will never be able to do will be to silence the rabid-Right. They cry when they are in power just as loudly as when they are out of power. I don’t mind listening to them once in a great while. It provides a little humor in what might be an otherwise dull routine. Of course they said the same thing about Hitler….

I challenge Herr Null’s claim that the Rights love their grandmothers more than I love mine. The last time I saw her I gave her a big kiss on her cold nose and told her just how much I loved her—just before kicking her adrift on her ice flow.

Dear Nanook,

Interestingly someone asked me yesterday if I believe this very scenario is possible. I think civil war is possible. I think the rabid right is foaming at the mouth and buying, apparently, lots of ammo. But I think this is being fomented by the neoconservatives who know full well that ultimately only under a blanket of mass outrage will Cheney/Bush and Co. ever not be prosecuted. They are literally covered from the consequences of their crimes - until this hysteria settles down. I actually think this was somewhat inevitable given that you can only whip up mobs so far before they have to kill. The corporate media powers and armaments industries have been making way too much profit from this whole song and dance of the last ten/fifteen years to let go soon. Corporate America is aligned against the citizenry who claim the rights of justice and diplomacy, and unfortunately, like spoiled children who discover that someone has removed one of their many toys, American exceptionalism has bred this. Looking in from the outside - I live in Canada - the USA went berserk beginning with Clintons penis as an event and it\'s been steeply downhill ever since. The mark of the right is that they project their insanity onto everyone else and thus no one is safe with a far right \'victim.\'

I think Obama is just trying to surf over all of this and to placate the powers that be. He may be in the most elevated position in America, but he\'s mostly just puppeting along with an eye to corporate interests. He has nothing to fear from the left....we didn\'t vote for Palin and what\'s his name for clearly good reason. Until there is a viable third way as there is here in Canada, I think we (I\'m American) will be at the mercy of the right. However the bigger question is when will we, as a democratic nation return to representative democracy. Not corporate democracy, which obviously doesnt\' work and which, at some point, the piper must be paid.

Also, Bob, excellent rebuttal points re: Nazi Germany. Most of these people wouldn\'t recognize facism if it rolled over on them. The dumbed are all dumbed down now.
