Dyn-O-Mite!

“WASHINGTON—AP—The awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to President Barack Obama landed with a shock on darkened, still-asleep Washington. He won! For what?

For one of America's youngest presidents, in office less than nine months — and only for 12 days before the Nobel nomination deadline last February — it was an enormous honor.

The prize seems to be more for Obama's promise than for his performance. The Nobel committee cited as his key accomplishment "a new climate in international politics." The president has become "the world's leading spokesman" for its agenda, the committee said.”

World response to the Nobel Peace prize generally seems to be a double take characterized by the question posed in this AP release, “For what?”

Because of his dismal record on peace as evidenced by his disgraceful lack of placing any deadline on a withdrawal from Iraq, the new expansion of the war in Afghanistan, the expansion of that war into Pakistan, the arms rattling threats against Iran for their believed nuclear arms program, his uncritical support for warmongering Israel, (need I go on and on?), Obama might well be regarded as one of the worst influences for peace in the world.

They said that this award is more for his promise than his performance.  I think we who supported Obama during the primaries, thinking he would be a force for change in health care reform and the environment have learned the value of Obama’s promises.

The most dangerous result of this award, other than the debasing of the Nobel legacy will be to actually encourage Obama’s hawkish tendencies. People rarely rally support for wars by crying “War!”  They do it by crying that they fight for “Peace!”  Leaders like Obama have always failed to see that contradiction.

The time has come to stop our reluctant support for this fraudulent administration.  We need to look elsewhere to find real voices for change and for honest support for the cause of World Peace!

Peace,

Dyn-O-Mite??
A friend and progressive Obama supporter writes:

"I really think you have gone off the end on this anti Obama thing. Also...I find the title of your piece rather racist."

I have accepted the fact that I still can't shake the Obama pixie-dust out of my friend’s eyes, but what disturbs me about his latest comment is the accusation of racism. In my critique of the Nobel committee’s Peace Prize selection, I was simply trying to draw what I thought was the rather clever (?) connection between the famous Jimmie Walker expression of exceeding amazement, bordering on incredulity (Dyn-O-Mite!) with the award named in honor of the inventor of dynamite. Since I have heard both black and white people use this expression universally, it never occurred to me that it would have any racist connotation other than—that the phrase was coined by a black comedian.

What is disturbing here is my suspicion that Obama supporters may be falling back to a rear-guard, desperation position of fending off legitimate attacks on their hero as being motivated by racism—a little like defenders of Israel attacking even modest critiques as anti-Semitism.

Does anyone out there see any basis for this accusation? Inquiring minds want to know.

Peace,
