How Can I Hold My Baby?
By Rick Burnley

A friend came back from Bagdad
And shared something that he saw
That would stay with him forever
That stuck deep inside his craw
He’d stopped by a hospital in the city
One in name alone
No doctors, or electricity
Not even a telephone
To say nothing of no medicine,
No nurses, nada.
Another burned out husk
From America’s intifada
A young woman was brought in by a taxi
She’d just lost both of her arms
And she’d just given birth to a baby
Amidst the screaming air raid alarms
The smart bombs we dropped had a low IQ
And many innocent people were killed
And with the victims of our “collateral damage”
The morgues and hospitals filled
The terrible scene of this poor young mother
Was more than one could bear,
Except hers was a worse reality,
That no one but she could share
Her infant was placed by her side to comfort her
But her big dark eyes filled with tears
And her terrible pain left an indelible stain
That would stay with all for years.
And then she asked a question,
One that every mother understands,
“How can I hold my baby, without my arms and hands?”

How can I hold my baby without my arms and hands?
This is just a token of the cost
When we bomb foreign lands
Have we taken leave of our senses?
Are we totally insane?
America’s foreign policies
Cause the world to writhe in pain.
