350 Day message: 300-350 ppm CO2

24 October is United Nations Day but has also been named 350 Day for global action by the organization 350.org that wants an atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration of no more than 350 parts per million (ppm). Top climate scientists now say that CO2 must be 300-350 ppm ASAP for a safe planet for all peoples and all species.

When we face life-threatening disease we turn for advice to top medical experts at the cutting edge of research in the relevant medical disciplines. For parents to do otherwise in relation to their sick children or non medicos to advocate otherwise would be seen as utterly irresponsible with potential culpability in  manslaughter if the sick persons die.

The same applies to other areas of risk management of which the most critical for humanity at the moment are nuclear weapons, poverty and man-made climate change. Because we have a carbon-based global economy and because “money buys votes” in the hugely polluting and media oligopoly-dominated Western democracies (Murdochracies), Western governments are simply not facing up to their responsibilities for curbing man-made greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution.

The big question for politicians and voters is how much more GHG pollution can we afford to pump out into the atmosphere? The answer from top climate scientists is that not only must we STOP polluting the atmosphere as soon as possible (ASAP) but we also need to REDUCE the atmosphere CO2 from the present 390 ppm to about 300-350 ppm for a safe planet for all peoples and all species.

Unfortunately, world governments want to INCREASE GHG pollution  and are thus heading in the opposite direction from that advocated by top scientists and top scientific organizations who say we must REDUCE GHG pollution and in particular must REDUCE the atmosphere  CO2 concentration from the current 390 ppm to 300-350 ppm. Shockingly, CO2 concentration is currently increasing at the fastest rate (2.5 ppm per year) in the post-industrial era and indeed for millions of years.

I am a 5 decade career research biochemist, author of over 100 scientific publications and 4 books and involved in the area of plant biochemistry that is intimately related to man-made climate change and its solutions. However if there is one thing one learns as a scientist it is to appreciate your own deficiencies and to take very seriously the opinions of the top scientists in your own discipline and in other disciplines.

Below are selected individual and collective opinions of outstanding climate scientists in relation to the urgent need to REDUCE atmospheric CO2 to 300-350 ppm for a safe planet for all peoples and all species. For detailed documentation the reader is referred to an extensive compilation of such opinions by 300.org that demands a return of atmosphere CO2 concentration to the pre-industrial 300 ppm CO2; see  “300.org – return atmosphere CO2 to 300 ppm “:   .

1. Dr James Hansen  (top US climate scientist; Director, NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies; member of the prestigious  US National Academy of Sciences; 2007 Award for Scientific Freedom and Responsibility of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science; Adjunct Professor, Columbia University, New York, USA): “If humanity wishes to preserve a planet similar to that on which civilization developed and to which life on Earth is adapted, paleoclimate evidence and ongoing climate change suggest that CO2 will need to be reduced from its current 385 ppm to at most 350 ppm.”

2. Professor Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research., Germany  (2008): “"It is a compromise between ambition and feasibility. A rise of 2oC could avoid some of the big environmental disasters, but it is still only a compromise…It is a very sweeping argument, but nobody can say for sure that 330ppm is safe. Perhaps it will not matter whether we have 270ppm or 320ppm, but operating well outside the [historic] realm of carbon dioxide concentrations is risky as long as we have not fully understood the relevant feedback mechanisms"

3. Professor Barry Brook (Sir Hubert Wilkins chair of climate change and director of climate science at the University of Adelaide's Environment Institute ): “If the planet is like an oven, it's still possible to turn down the temperature. The number is 300 and the methods will be extraordinary. In 2007, a climate awareness campaign was launched by well-known environmental author Bill McKibben. It was coined 350.org, with the slogan "350 is the most important number on the planet". The figure refers to a target concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the Earth's atmosphere, in parts per million (ppm). This number was drawn from a recent study by a team of climate scientists, led by NASA's Dr James Hansen ... But there is another, more surprising, problem with 350. It's the wrong number. While 350 ppm should give us a reasonable shot at avoiding more than two degrees of warming, that's hardly a safe future to be aiming for. We need only to look at the impacts at less than one degree to know we're already committed to some tough adaptation problems … A target of 300 to 325 ppm CO2 - the levels of the 1950s - is necessary if we wish to cut additional warming and start to roll back the already damaging impacts. As such, 350 is not a target, it's a signpost to a goal. So we're aiming at 350 but the real goal is 300 and we're already at 385”.

4. Part of a  statement prepared by Dr Barrie Pittock (former leader, Climate Impact Group, CSIRO, IPCC Lead Author, and author of Climate Change: Turning Up the Heat), and Dr Andrew Glikson (Earth and paleoclimate research scientist, former Principal Research Scientist, AGSO; Visiting Fellow, Australian National University), and endorsed by 40 leading Australian environment scientists: “Australia to make every effort through its own and international actions to prevent CO2 -- equivalent levels from rising above 450 ppm and global warming from rising above 2 degrees C relative to pre-industrial temperatures, as is the European target. Further reduction of CO2 levels to 300-350 ppm may be required to have a reasonable probability of restoring a safe climate.”

5. Australia's premier research organization, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO): “Since the Industrial Revolution, the CO2 concentrations have risen 37%, methane 150% and nitrous oxide 18%. The global increases in CO2 concentration are due primarily to fossil fuel use and land-use change, while the increases in methane and nitrous oxide are primarily due to agriculture. The CO2 concentration in 2008 of 383 parts per million (ppm) is much higher than the natural range of 172 to 300 ppm that existed over the last 800,000 years.”

6. Dr Graeme Pearman (former CSIRO Climate director; GP Consulting; interim director, MSI; Monash University Sustainability Group, Melbourne),  “The Earth is deglaciating. Since 1979, more than 20% of the Polar Ice Cap has melted away …  Over the last century: global temperatures risen by 0.74 +/- 0.18oC; 11 of last 12 years rank as amongst the 12 warmest years; snow cover decreased in most regions, especially in spring and summer; summer period extended 12.3 days … Arctic sea-ice decline of 2.7 +/- 0.6 per cent per decade; sea ;levels have risen at a rate of: 1961-2003 1.9 +/- 0.5 mm yr-1, 1900-2000 1.7 +/- 0.5 mm yr-1; ocean acidification 0.1 pH unit so far … Gases: current carbon dioxide and methane concentrations far exceed those of the last 600,000 years; increases primarily due to fossil fuel use, agriculture and land-use changes.”

7. Statement by the technical working group on coral, The Royal Society on 6th July 2009 (including as Working group signatories Professor John Veron (Coral Reef Research), Dr Mary Stafford-Smith (Coral Reef Research), Prof. Ove Hoegh-Guldberg (University of Queensland) and Sir David Attenborough FRS and 20 other eminent scientists): "The Earth’s atmospheric CO2 level must be returned to <350ppm to reverse this escalating ecological crisis and to 320ppm to ensure permanent planetary health. Actions to achieve this must be taken urgently. The commonly mooted best case target of 450ppm and a time frame reaching to 2050 will plunge the Earth into an environmental state that has not occurred in millions of years and from which there will be no recovery for coral reefs and for many other natural systems on which humanity depends.”

8. Statement by the World's top climate scientists including Professors James Hansen (US), Hans Joachim Schellnhuber (Germany) , Paul Crutzen (Netherlands Nobel Laureate for discovering the ozone hole chemistry), in the  top scientific journal Nature that atmospheric CO2 must NOT exceed 350 ppm (September 2009): "Our proposed climate boundary is based on two critical thresholds that separate qualitatively different climate-system states. It has two parameters: atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide and radiative forcing (the rate of energy change per unit area of the globe as measured at the top of the atmosphere). We propose that human changes to atmospheric CO2 concentrations should not exceed 350 parts per million by volume, and that radiative forcing should not exceed 1 watt per square metre above pre-industrial levels. Transgressing these boundaries will increase the risk of irreversible climate change, such as the loss of major ice sheets, accelerated sea-level rise and abrupt shifts in forest and agricultural systems. Current CO2 concentration stands at 387 p.p.m.v. and the change in radiative forcing is 1.5 W m-2 ."

9. Dr Andrew Glikson (an Earth and paleo-climate research scientist at Australian National University, Canberra, Australia) (2009): “For some time now, climate scientists warned that melting of subpolar permafrost and warming of the Arctic Sea (up to 4 degrees C during 2005–2008 relative to the 1951–1980) are likely to result in the dissociation of methane hydrates and the release of this powerful greenhouse gas into the atmosphere (methane: 62 times the infrared warming effect of CO2 over 20 years and 21 times over 100 years)

… The amount of carbon stored in Arctic sediments and permafrost is estimated as 500–2500 Gigaton Carbon (GtC), as compared with the world’s total fossil fuel reserves estimated as 5000 GtC. Compare with the 700 GtC of the atmosphere, which regulate CO2 levels in the range of 180–300 parts per million and land temperatures in a range of about – 50 to + 50 degrees C, which allowed the evolution of warm blooded mammals. The continuing use of the atmosphere as an open sewer for industrial pollution has already added some 305 GtC to the atmosphere together with land clearing and animal-emitted methane.

This raised CO2 levels to 387 ppm CO2 to date, leading toward conditions which existed on Earth about 3 million years (Ma) ago (mid-Pliocene), when CO2 levels rose to about 400 ppm, temperatures to about 2–3 degrees C and sea levels by about 25 +/- 12 metres. There is little evidence for an extinction at 3 Ma. However, by crossing above a CO2 level of 400 ppm the atmosphere is moving into uncharted territory. At this stage, enhanced methane leaks threaten climate events, such as the massive methane release and fauna extinction of 55 million years ago, which was marked by rise of CO2 to near-1000 ppm.”

On the eve of 350 Day, 2009,  Dr Andrew Glikson (after whom the Glikson Crater in Western Australia is named) issued the following dire warning: “THE RISE OF ATMOSPHERIC CO2 ABOVE 350 PPM AT THE CURRENT RATE OF ABOUT 2 PPM/YEAR IS TRANSCENDING THE CONDITIONS THAT ALLOWED THE DEVELOPMENT OF HUMAN AGRICULTURE AND CIVILIZATION FROM ABOUT 8000 YEARS AGO… In the view of leading climate scientists there is no alternative to attempts at reducing atmospheric CO2 levels to below 350 ppm as soon as possible. What is urgently required is a combination of (A) urgent deep cuts in carbon emissions; (B) fast-track development of clean renewable energy systems; (C) an intensive global reforestation campaign; (D) application of a range of CO2 draw-down sequestration measures” (see  “350 ppm CO2: the upper limits of human habitats”, Countercurrents  ).

What can decent people do in the face of looming Climate Catastrophe and Climate Genocide  due to First World intransigence?  All we can do is (1) to inform everyone we can and (2) apply Sanctions and Boycotts against the worst climate criminal corporations and countries.

Who are the worst climate criminals? “Annual per capita greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution” in units of “tonnes CO2-equivalent per person per year” (2005-2008 data) provides a good measure of relative climate criminality and is is 0.9 (Bangladesh), 0.9 (Pakistan), 2.2 (India), 3.2 (the Developing World), 5.5 (China), 6.7 (the World), 11 (Europe), 16 (the Developed World), 27 (the US) and 30 (Australia; or 54 if Australia’s huge Exported CO2 pollution is included (see Wikipedia, “List of countries by greenhouse gas emissions per capita”  ; see also “Climate justice and climate injustice: Australia wants an 2020 annual per capita : GHG  pollution 15 times greater than Developing World’s”  ).

As Climate Genocide worsens with 10 billion non-European deaths threatened this century, there should be no place to hide on this Planet for the politician and corporate climate criminals – they are truly climate racists and climate terrorists of the most appalling kind.

Dr Gideon Polya,  MWC News Chief political editor, published some 130 works in a 4 decade scientific career, most recently a huge pharmacological reference text "Biochemical Targets of Plant Bioactive Compounds" (CRC Press/Taylor & Francis, New York & London, 2003), and is currently writing a book on global mortality ---

2 Dumb robots called R2D2 & CO22
One-day while I-was busy thinking...

When I-was a very inquisitive 14-y\\o back in 1971 I-was talking to GHW-Bush when he was still South East Asia Bureau Chief at CIA & he was telling me that folks at NASA had told him that the sun was getting hotter... I-realise just how unpopular telling the truth has become in spin-city central & the work some of you MWC people do literally helps keep me sane merely to see someone speaking (Writing) the truth on various subjects but let me run that by you again in CAPS just so you can know that I-will be literally shouting at you to get your attention & beg you to consider going off-message just for a short period of sanity & rational logical thinking at which time you may wish to consider the reason there are magnetic disturbances in & around a sunspot is that in an iron-rich star like ours is with the plasma in the two areas within & outside of the sunspot operating at different temperatures then it\'s quite logical for the magnetic qualities of the iron-rich plasma to flux wildly as each area would show different responses to magnetic stimuli because the cooler temperature within or outside of the sunspot (Whichever it is) will mean the iron molecules in the plasma will behave differently...

So anyway here I-am yelling...

Again this was back in 1971 down in Adelaide South Australia as George Herbert Walker was fulfilling his duties doing the overseeing of a black-op called THE FAMILY CULT which sadly I-was forced to grow-up in supplying my young body to various perverts so they could be film & politically blackmailed after & we used to talk afterwards & he often used to skite & brag quite a bit & when he wasn\'t doing that we\'d simply talk... While talking one day he informed me that FOLKS AT NASA (North American Space Agency) HAD TOLD HIM THAT THE SUN WAS GETTING HOTTER & just in case your hearing aids were turned down may I-just yell that at you one more time just to be sure because this was part of a real conversation that really happened & he literally said that FOLKS AT NASA HAD TOLD HIM THE SUN WAS GETTING HOTTER & we got to talking about all sorts of things to do with how CIA sees it as their business to stop people worrying & then thinking too much & he told me that they were going to use the idea of the MAGNETIC ANOMALIES causing the sunspots rather than the other way around with the SUNSPOTS THEMSELVES ACTUALLY CAUSING THE MAGNETIC ANOMALIES which is the real truth & the reason is quite simply that our star is a whole lot older than we\'ve been told & just like Christ & the prophet ISAIAH said pretty soon (In our century) the sun will get-up dark one morning without shining at-all just like it says in Isaiah Chapter 24: & verse 23 & like Christ himself said in Mathew 24:29 adding that instead of shining light it will scorch the earth with great heat which funnily enough is exactly what you could logically expect an iron-rich star like ours to do once it had exhausted it’s cycle of easy to burn hydrogen & then moved onto burning iron or whatever because there or elsewhere when Christ talked on this subject he stated that the sun will literally scorch the earth & all of that radiant heat will also be getting forced inwards into the centre of the star & at some time in the future after that it will reach a stage where it literally ignites all of the remaining 100.000 tonnes (Give or take a few million) of widely scattered & highly unstable deuterium molecules (Hydrogen-irons) incapable of going into fission without the incredible amounts of heat & pressure that will certainly be generated while not capable of truly sustaining any of the fusion anymore & quite simply it will go BANG or BOOM or KLA-TOMB whatever noise you think a supernova will make while St Peter who was one of Christ’s intimate offsiders described it as such…

“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night in the which the heavens shall pass away with a GREAT (Shrill) NOISE and the elements shall melt with fervent heat the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up“ & whatever you think about the idiocy some preach & teach about HELLFIRE being created in the heart of Christ & his father (sic) which many preachers & nearly-all Charis-maniac teachers try to tell people it‘s more likely the LAKE OF FIRE that Christ offered a rescue from will be in this very solar-system after THE DAY OF-THE LORD turns this earth into a sulphurous cinderblock surrounded by nuclear brimstone….

So anyway if I-may take the liberty of yelling at you again I-will repeat George Herbert Walker saying that ACCORDING TO THE GOOD FOLKS AT NASA THE SUN WAS GETTING HOTTER & whatever way you look at it you would have to wonder about exactly why the whole machine (ery) of government is so determined to stop the people from seeing & understanding that there are very sound scientific reasons for all of the prophesies & predictions that both Christ & St Peter made & also Isaiah in the other geophysical cataclysmic chapters around 23-24 & 25 & again you would have to wonder out loud why with George Herbert Walker Bush hearing firsthand from NASA that the SUN IS GETTING HOTTER (Excuse-me yelling again) & so all of that crap about greenhouse gases being the culprit & all of the total BS about cutting our CO2 level is a real pain in the butt if you are a simple logical truthful person…

Have a good think about-it soon…

Your’s ion simple truth…

Global warming is man-made
Readers of this thread - just as we turn to top medical advice in the face of a life-threatening medical condition (rather than to uncredentialled bloggers), so when faced, as we now are, with with a worsening climate emergency, we turn to top climate scientists (rather than uncredentialled bloggers).

Read the article and the opinions of the world's top climate scientists who say that global warming is man-made and that the solar irradiance fluctuation is a very minor player.

Thus see Professor John Holdren (Professor of Environmental Policy and Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Harvard University; Director, Woods Hole Research Center; former president, American Association for the Advancement of Science, AAAS; President Barack Obama’s chief science adviser), “The Science of Climate Disruption” (2008), a summary of the basis of man-made global warming and the climatic disruption that has already occurred (see: Professor Holdren on Man-made Climatic Disruption).

Professor Holdren points out that man-made global warming "forcings" (contributions) are 30 times greater than that due to the 11-year-cycle changes in solar irradiance.

Credentials Smedentials Gideon...
Granted I-do not have any piece of paper giving me permission to tell the truth & use common sense but I-do it anyway... With that in mind I-can assure you I-quoted George Herbert Walker word-for-word about what he told-me NASA had told him in 1971 & again what he said (Excuse-me yelling in CAPS again) was the FOLKS AT NASA HAD TOLD HIM THE SUN WAS GETTING HOTTER" & as I-was quite a bright young fellow with an IQ way above the 160 I-was sounded at in high-school (As a child I-always played dumb because it made life simpler) I-made sure that what I-heard was what he said & once again according to him the good folks at NASA had literally said "THE SUN WAS GETTING HOTTER" & so you can wheel out all of the high-priced minds for rent you want but I-have something far better... I-call it an honest mind & a truthful heart & after George Herbert Walker told me what he said about the "SUN GETTING HOTTER" I-took a good look at every possible reason & cause & I-have never been dumb enough to think of Christ as only being as intelligent as the fools who follow him... His birth was an IVF conception & the whole story of the "ELOYHIM" (Or the ENLIL of the Sumerians) having the science of lasers to wipe out Sodom & Gomorrah & several other instances of the same including where Elijah had his entire stone altar literally vaporised showed me that Christ was likely to have been given scientific insight similar to Enoch but unlike Enoch he refused to then ramble on about stuff he knew nothing of... Again it was GHW-Bush himself who said to me that "NASA SAID THE SUN WAS GETTING HOTTER" & that is just simple fact & the conclusions I-have drawn were for my own peace of mind & they are valid with or without a piece of paper giving-me permission to either think OR tell the truth...

Have a nice day Gideon...

Ozone hole and skin burning
For people in Southern Australia (I am in Melbourne, Victoria) our perception that the sun is getting hotter is quite real as is skin burning due to solar irradiation - and this is because of the hole in the ozone layer and not due to major changes in solar irradiance intensity.

The cyclical changes in solar irradiance - the radiation given out by the sun - have a very small impact on global warming in comparison with man-made greenhouse gas pollution.

A clean cheap and abundant new energy so
Frankly, I find articles like the above to be pie-in-the-sky because, while they rightfully call for a reduction of carbon in the air, they also call for an unfeasible severe carbon diet. Mankind is set to increase emissions 50% by 2030, not cut them dramatically.

On the other hand, the following emerging clean energy technology will make cutting emissions CHEAPER than burning fossil fuel:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1iqa0dSJO0

Check out above link to a 2 and a half minute youtube video of a CNN report. What are the odds that the independent testimony below is fraudulent (not bloody likely unless you are a paranoid conspiracy theorist)? Here is a silver bullet technology: clean cheap and abundant energy.

In a joint statement, Dr. K.V. Ramanujachary, Rowan University Meritorious Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Dr. Amos Mugweru, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, and Dr. Peter Jansson P.E., Associate Professor of Engineering said, "In independent tests conducted over the past three months involving 10 solid fuels made by us from commercially-available chemicals, our team of engineering and chemistry professors, staff, and students at Rowan University has independently and consistently generated energy in excesses ranging from 1.2 times to 6.5 times the maximum theoretical heat available through known chemical reactions."

Renewables cheaper than coal
The technologies for geothermal energy systems and renewable energy (wind, wave, tide, solar PV, concentrated solar thermal) have already been developed and applied commercially.

The best non-carbon energy systems are about 4 times the true cost of coal burning-based power talking human morbidity and mortality into account (in turn 4-5 times the heavily subsidized market price) (see How many people die from Carbon Burning and Climate Change each year? and also see CROSS-OVER POINT: Best Renewable and Geothermal Power NOW for SAME COST as Fossil fuel-based Power ).

US, Canadian and Apartheid Australian carbon pollution at the expense of the Developed World (most obviously Tuvalu, Kiribati, the Maldives and Bangladesh to name just a few acutely threatened countries) is akin to forcing others to share your cigarette smoke - however while tobacco smoking will kill about 100 years x 5 million deaths/year = 0.5 billion deaths this century, Anglo-American climate genocide is predicted to kill 10 billion non-Europeans this century due to unaddressed carbon pollution.

Is any alternative 2 cents a kilowatt ho
Coal is about 4 cents a kilowatt hour (frankly, I don't know it's "true" cost):

http://money.cnn.com/2008/07/01/smallbusiness/blacklight.fsb/index.htm

“The working models in his lab generate 50 kilowatts of electricity - enough to power six or seven houses. But these, Mills says, can be scaled to drive a large, electric power plant. The inventor claims this electricity will cost less than 2 cents per kilowatt-hour, which compares to a national average of 8.9 cents…The business, Mills says, has attracted $60 million in funding from wealthy individuals, investment firms, and utilities such as Delaware's Conectiv, and it is no longer seeking money. BlackLight's board of directors reads like a Who's Who of finance and energy leaders, including Michael Jordan, former CEO of both Electronic Data Systems (EDS, Fortune 500) and Westinghouse; Neil Moskowitz, CFO of Credit Suisse First Boston; and Shelby Brewer, former CEO of ABB (ABB) Combustion Engineering Nuclear Power.”

A good mitigation method exists
CO2 emission reduction will happen, but it's hard, because governments get revenue on the fuels from which the carbon comes. They get revenue they wouldn't get on other sources of the same energy. So they advocate sources they believe to be ineffective: renewables and conservation.

Fortunately it is easier to reduce net emissions than to reduce gross ones, as Dr. R.D. Schuiling explains.

350 ppm CO2 needs renewables
One can only repeat the 350 Day advice of paleoclimate and earth scientist Dr Andrew Glikson (Australian National University): "In the view of leading climate scientists there is no alternative to attempts at reducing atmospheric CO2 levels to below 350 ppm as soon as possible. What is urgently required is a combination of (A) urgent deep cuts in carbon emissions; (B) fast-track development of clean renewable energy systems; (C) an intensive global reforestation campaign; (D) application of a range of CO2 draw-down sequestration measures”

Silly stubborn scared sheeple...
Seeing as you're all so determined to run along with the flock & go 'BAA-BAA' about the cause of global warming being manmade then so-be-it but despite the so-called scientific opinion being so totally all one-sided about global-warming actually then always being manmade (It isn't all one-sided by the way but it seems the big-money wielded by the powers that be that regularly take us into wars we didn't need with WMD scares that were totally based on false info still carry a heavy impetus) I'll for a time play your silly little game & will agree the health of the overall planet will greatly benefit if carbon use is cut but that's only because all of the rotten nitrates & the sulphur dioxides & sulphur based sulphuric-acid tains that poison our forests would also be cut (Although Russia has developed cheap excellant ways of cleaning the output of the factories that so pollute us... Also in addition to the many real alternative clean fuels & power sources being repressed (Really) there are also the sequestration technologies which could be used to push those bloody acid-rains underground & of the CO2 itself has anyone not noticed it's one of the main compounds of granite so I'm led to loosely still believe & so an opportunity to turn CO2 into a viable form of building material with some kind of economic advantage also exists but again to stubbornly cling to the notion that this will stop the ice at the poles melting (With the planet eventually wobbling from the harmonic imbalance the removal of the weight of the ice will cause) is just simply child-like wish fulfillment & it's one wish that will go on being unfulfilled simply because it doesn't match scientific reality despite what the all the many supposedly scientific & logical minds for rent keep saying...

Listen to top climate scientists
Readers of this thread - just as we take the advice of top medical experts over life-threatening medical emergency so we are wise to take the advice of top climate scientists in relation to the current climate disruption and the worsening climate emergency (that if unaddressed will kill an estimated 10 billion people this century).

We are wise to take the advice of top, expert, credentialled scientists in both cases - rather than the false, unsubstantiated assertions of uncredentialled bloggers.

For the opinions of outstanding climate scientists about man-made climate change read the article and consult the quoted references.

A severe carbon diet is unfeasible (what
The world's "scientists" say we ought to put less CO2 into the air?

"The world's emissions of the main planet-warming gas carbon dioxide will rise over 50 percent to more than 42 billion tonnes per year from 2005 to 2030 as China leads a rise in burning coal, the U.S. government forecast on Wednesday. China's coal demand will rise 3.2 percent annually from 2005 to 2030, the Energy Information Administration said in its International Energy Outlook 2008." --Reuters, 26 June 2008

Any carbon diet strategy would be dependent upon clean coal:

"The vast majority of new power stations in China and India will be coal-fired; not "may be coal-fired"; will be. So developing carbon capture and storage technology is not optional, it is literally of the essence." --"Breaking the Climate Deadlock," Tony Blair, June 26, 2008

But, Vaclav Smil, an energy expert at the University of Manitoba, has estimated that capturing and burying just 10 percent of the carbon dioxide emitted over a year from coal-fire plants at current rates would require moving volumes of compressed carbon dioxide greater than the total annual flow of oil worldwide -- a massive undertaking requiring decades and trillions of dollars. "Beware of the scale," he stressed."

I suppose Smil is credentialled enough .
but his analysis is misleading, because it is much easier and cheaper to sequester the annual production of fossil fuel-derived CO2, about 30 billion tonnes, as a 1-mm layer of the stable mineral magnesite on the upper surface of North America than as however many km^3 of deeply buried pockets of high-pressure liquid. So Smil knocks over a straw man. The world would be better off if he just shut up.

Also see David MacKay's explanation of this.

Magnesite, huh?
Do you have any idea how much money in infrastructure, energy, and transportation costs it would take to convert and safely dispose of 30 billion (your figure, which no doubt would will rise rapidly as emissions increase) tonnes of CO2 into magnesite (let alone spread it across the US in a 1mm layer)? Although, it seems like a better idea than condensing it and pumping it underground. Frankly, I think you should listen to Dr Smil and "beware of the scale."

CO2 draw-down to 300 ppm ASAP
Re Brad Arnold's post #13 - top climate scientists are not merely saying that "we ought to put less CO2 into the air" short-term, they are saying that we should be actively REMOVING CO2 from the air to a target of 300-350 ppm from the present 390 ppm.

World governments (notably the climate criminal government of terracidal, genocidal, racist Apartheid Australia) are in effect saying the OPPOSITE.

Top scientists and top scientific organizations are demanding NEGATIVE CO2 pollution i.e. ultimately zero net emissions followed by net draw-down of air CO2.

Continued CO2 pollution compounds the problem of CO2 removal (as wood in living forests, biochar, i.e. charcoal, or as insoluble carbonates such as magnesite).

Negative CO2
Yeah, when worldwide emissions are expected to grow 50% by 2030, scientists are calling for NEGATIVE CO2, that's the ticket. I am very well aware of the 350ppm movement. In fact, there is a realistic way to sequester carbon: just dump biomass onto the bottom of the ocean - there is even a way to remove the CO2 from the ocean and sequester it into volcanic rock (I will furnish both articles upon request). On my blog, I call for a GMO to be seeded into the ocean that removes carbon from the air and converts it into granules of sand that sink to the bottom of the ocean. There is even a clean new energy technology that will deliver electricity at less than 1 cent a kilowatt hour (www.blacklightpower.com).

But again, here is what Climate Code Red says:

--Human emissions have so far produced a global average temperature increase of 0.8 degree C.

--There is another 0.6 degree C. to come due to "thermal inertia", or lags in the system, taking the total long-term global warming induced by human emissions so far to 1.4 degree C.

--If human total emissions continue as they are to 2030 (and don't increase 60% as projected) this would likely add more than 0.4 degrees C. to the system in the next two decades, taking the long-term effect by 2030 to at least 1.7 degrees C. (A 0.3 degree C. increase is predicted for the period 2004-2014 alone by Smith, Cusack et al, 2007).

--Then add the 0.3 degree C. albedo flip effect from the now imminent loss of the Arctic sea ice, and the rise in the system by 2030 is at least 2 degree. C, assum ing very optimistically that emissions don't increase at all above their present annual rate! When we consider the potential permafrost releases and the effect of carbon sinks losing capacity, we are on the road to a hellish future, not for what we will do, but WHAT WE HAVE ALREADY DONE.

Can reduce air CO2 via biochar
Biomass is largely cellulose or related polydsaccharides (circa (CH2O)n ) that decompose via aerobic organisms yielding CO2 (a greenhouse gas, GHG) or degrade via anaerobic organisms to yield methane (CH4; 25 times worse than CO2 as a GHG on a 100 year time scale and 72 times worse on a 20 year time scale).

For stable carbon sequestration, biomass must be subject to anaerobic pyrolysis at circa 400-700 degress C yielding biochar (charcoal, carbon, C) which can be safely stored underground away from fire and oxygen.

The amount of biochar that can be potentially generated pa from agricultural and forestry waste is similar in magnitude to the carbon put into the atmosphere each year by man's activities (for details and documentation see "Forest biomass-derived Biochar can profitably reduce global warming and bushfire risk ": Forest biomass-derived Biochar can profitably reduce global warming and bushfire risk ).

Are heat emissions primarily responsible
I just read the article on biochar, and it appears that it can make a serious dent in mankind's net carbon emissions, although there is a significant question whether mankind's HEAT EMISSIONS is also driving global warming. A recent peer-reviewed article "Global energy accumulation and net heat emission" calculates that a lion-share of the extra accumulated heat is from mankind's heat emissions! I corresponded with one of the authors and he gave a calculation of CO2(e) to emitted heat:

"The global warming 1880-2000 corresponds to the energy received during 62 hours. The neat heat emission during the same time corresponds to 74% of 62 hours i.e. 46 hours. The heat/CO2(e) ratio would then be 46/16 = 2.86 provided that CO2 is responsible for all of the missing heat (26%)." --Professor Bo Nordell, Renewable Energy, Luleå University of Technology, Lulea, Sweden

Simply amazing. A credible challenge to basic global warming theory; a change of paradigm.

Most of extra heat in oceans
Readers of this thread - man's heat emissions largely derive from (A) burning fossil fuels for transport, heating and electricity (and thence heat from electricity usage) and (B) consequential increase in heating of the earth from radiation absorption by increased greenhouse gases (GHGs), notably CO2, in the atmosphere.

Over 90% of the extra heat in the last century or so has ended up in the oceans - for a detailed analysis see Professor Barry Brook (holds Foundation Sir Hubert Wilkins Chair of Climate Change and is Director of Climate Science at The Environment Institute, University of Adelaide, South Australia): What Bob Carter and Andrew Bolt fail to grasp. Professor Barry Brook on continuing, huge Ocean warming.

Professor Brook: "Water stores an immense amount of heat compared with air. It takes more than 1000 times as much energy to heat a cubic metre of water by 1 degree Centigrade as it does the same volume of air. Since the 1960s, over 90% of the excess heat due to higher greenhouse gas levels has gone into the oceans, and just 3% into warming the atmosphere ... So, next time a climate sceptic turns to you and says ‘Global warming is nonsense ’cause the Earth hasn’t warmed in the last 10 years’, you can simply reply ‘Errr – why are you ignoring 97% of the problem?’."

Less than 30% of the excess heat accumul
The extra heat accumulated in the air corresponds to 6.6% of global warming, while the remaining heat is stored in the ground (31.5%), melting of ice (33.4%) and sea water (28.5%).

I suggest you read the paper "Global energy accumulation and net heat emission."

In other words, it is nonsense that "90% of the excess heat...has gone into the oceans, and just 3% into warming the atmosphere." It isn't even close to accurate.

Extra heat due to extra GHGs
Paragraph 2 of post 20 should have included the addition in bold "90% of the extra heat DUE TO HIGHER GREENHOUSE GAS LEVELS when I wrote of Professo Brook's opinion (now amended) " Over 90% of the extra heat DUE TO HIGHER GREENHOUSE GAS LEVELS in the last century or so has ended up in the oceans - for a detailed analysis see Professor Barry Brook (holds Foundation Sir Hubert Wilkins Chair of Climate Change and is Director of Climate Science at The Environment Institute, University of Adelaide, South Australia).

This was indeed made quite clear in paragraph 3 of post #20 and is not "nonsense".

Professor Brook's statement is not inconsistent with the assertions of Nordell & Gervet quoted in post #21.
