A Counter Agrument To An Argue-Punch

On February 8, Counter Punch published an article titled  "Chill Out Jihadis, They're Just Cartoons" [1] by Christopher Fons. Fons opening statement is, "Many "leftists" have taken the position that the cartoons published in the Danish paper and elsewhere are primarily a representation of Western racism and should be condemned. Nonsense."

Strangely enough, Fons leaves "leftist" in quotation, which makes one wonder, was he referring to those who Mr. Fons do not consider leftist, and so to himself, as the correct leftist? I don't know if by "Leftist" the authors' intention was to address those who subscribe to the :Materialist Dialectic" or if he uses the common understanding of the word which is taught in the U.S. and is meant to cover all those who are not Conservatives, (or maybe even those are 'sinisterly' left handed....)

If Mr. Fons' target is the latter, then Mr. Fons, with a little borrowing of the extreme right term "Jihadis" and adding a dash of slang, "Chill out",  leave one with no choice but to add him to that category and so there's no need to take him seriously at all.

But, if the target of his article are those who subscribe to Materialist Dialectic, and use that as a methodology to analyze social phenomenon, as he also cites in his next paragraph, "As a leftist I thought that our goal was liberation through thorough and robust debate and confronting irrational ideas and superstition in particular?" then he could not be more wrong.

The issue is not one support of the superstitious, it is about the opposing the hate speech in all its forms. It's not about what Muslims believe or don't believe, it's about attacking someone based on their beliefs and their choice. The cartoon message was as wrong as the alternative for retaliation; a "Cartoon of the Holocaust" by an Iranian paper.

This is what separates left from those who use the status quo for everything; those who believe the Bible, Quran, Torah, etc., dealt with every situation that mankind faces, now and forever, and have an easy task of the generalization of everything thereafter making a decision based on that.

The informed Left does not have such an easy task; we use our methodology in a case-by-case basis. We must evaluate events based of their potential outcomes. This Left does not profile all those Muslims who oppose insult to their beliefs as "Jihadis".

As lefts [leftists], one of our responsibilities is to recognize and differentiate the verity of shades between black and white, regardless of the relativism we may wish to embrace.
