Close Guantanamo Prison?

PuuurrrMoon CA, B.C: I find this all disgusting! It's a ruse used by rumsey & co to keep people from helping thier countrymen. Perhaps they need to be held captive for a period of time.

Alex Li, 16, Charlotte Latin School, Charlotte: No matter what eventually happens to the Guantanamo base, there is an indelible mark on the ethics of the American government for even allowing allegations of torture and abuse to be spread due to its actions. I believe closing the base would give some form of closure to the debacle in Cuba, but the government better tread very carefully from now on.

Haley Price, 18, Appalachian State University, Boone: President Bush and other government officials refuse to allow U.N. inspectors into Cuba to assess the amount of illegal activity and claim to the people of this country that nothing is wrong. If that were the case, why would you not want to prove that to the rest of the world? We're not asking for some great tell-all expose on the practices in Guantanamo; however, I feel that the base should definitely be re-evaluated for effectiveness and the current leadership should be carefully scrutinized.

Will Stancil, 19, Wake Forest University, Winston Salem: Guantanamo isn't crucial; you can build a prison anywhere, albeit not one with the shadowy legal advantages afforded by being located off U.S. soil. If the administration has any hope of repairing our national reputation, it ought to spend less time finding loopholes in the Constitution, and worry about the rights that document is designed to protect. A good first step: Close Guantanamo, a facility that, to most of the world, represents nothing but abuse and torture.

Quinn Patrick Foster, 16, Sun Valley High, Monroe: How the prisoners detained at Guantanamo can be of any use to the investigation on terrorism escapes me. Many of these individuals have been incarcerated for several years. Whatever information they may have had is obviously outdated and irrelevant. I personally do not trust this administration's claim that there is no torture or abuse of the alleged terrorists. If there is no credible evidence that these prisoners are a threat to our security, they must be released. After all, in this country we are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Kimberly Flanagan, 17, home-schooled, Charlotte: We cannot foolishly believe that we are above the laws we have set on other nations and people. Our downfall will be our pride in believing more in ourselves than in the power from above. Accusations from Guantanamo Bay prison, true or untrue, should open our eyes to the fact we are not a perfect nation. I believe that those in the prison should be fairly but firmly treated in order to stop terrorism.

Daniel Staten, 17, David W. Butler High, Matthews: The allegations of abuse and torture of the terrorist detainees in Guantanamo Bay aren't enough to warrant the closing of it. Instead of closing the facility, those accused of the abuse should be investigated and dealt with. We should do everything in our power to prevent terrorism from thriving. Those suggesting the closure should let the facility serve its purpose and allow the government to continue to protect its people, and punish the ones trying to commit acts of terrorism.

I can't believe the incredible naivity I just read re "Close Guantanamo".

Those prisoners would kill you in an instant if they were free and given the opportunity.  Have you all forgotten where and when and why they were taken prisoner??  Those people (Terrorists!) have sworn to kill as many of you as they can.  I'm old enough to have spent time in a fox-hole with real bullets whizzing overhead and killing many of my friends.  Being humane to the enemy was often greeted by a grenade blast that took out the benefactor as well as the intended recepient of the good deed. These terrorists hated us long before we went to Iraq; Have you forgotten 9-11 and the prior attempt to destroy the twin towers?? Maybe the first attempt occurred before you were out of diapers? After having read parts of high school text-books re WW2 and the absolute nonsense that has been inserted into them by a bunch of draft-dodging professors I don't have much hope for the survival of our country.  Face one basic fact, we are hated by much of the world out of their jealousy of our rich way of life produced by just plain hard work and an abundance of basic resources.  Don't listen to the common drivel that we should feel guilty over what we have in this once-great country, feel proud, not guilty over what we have done.

Most of the world would like to see us fall so they could leap in and grab some of what we have!Don't be mis-lead, be proud enough to be ready to defend what we have and above all, make a real contribution to our fabulous economy. Remember, we financed and rebuilt most of the world after WW2 and our industries built most of the war materials that allowed most of the world to be freed of Hitler's, Tojo's and Mussolini's attempt to enslave the entire world - via killing, torture, enslavement and rape!  And, hundreds of thousands of my generation gave their lives to save our way of life from those rapacious leaders.

Are you ready to look through the blizzard of nonsense blowing out of the colleges and media that says we should be ashamed of ourselves??  Wake up and open your eyes, the truth is there is you will seek it out!

AND CONSIDER THIS: If you really want to stop killing, learn how to drive your car!  About 800 people are killed and several thousands severly injured EACH WEEK in this country ----- just driving in their automobiles. Have you ever considered why the media don't focus on that???!!!  Now that's one helluva bunch of body bags every week, isn't it!  So if you really want to stop the killing and torture (yes torture of the automobile-wounded)focus on that which goes on here at home.  My conclusion is that the media and many/most college profs simply want to brainwash you for their own political end!

Editor response to above

Rapacious leaders. [Most who gave their lives were often teenagers who had no great moral imperative that we were saving the world for democracy and preserving America. BUT, there is a huge difference between what we fought for in WWII and Korea, and what we  fought for in both Gulf Wars.—ED]

Are you ready to look through the blizzard of nonsense blowing out of the colleges and media that says we should be ashamed of ourselves?? [You have evidence? Proof? We attack a country because of political lies, and then try to claim that we are spreading democracy when those first lies are exposed. We certainly had more of a reason to attack North Korea, but we didn’t. That’s probably because Bush had already said many times that he was going to avenge the first Gulf war in which his father wisely didn’t invade Iraq itself, and even stated in print why he didn’t invade Iraq. Iraq did become even weaker after that war. But, Saddam did threaten Bush 41, and so Bush Lite, who doesn’t have half of his father’s intelligence or guts decides vengeance was his. There are massive data files to support why Bush Lite did what he did.—ED]

Wake up and open your eyes, the truth is there is you will seek itout! [The truth IS out there, but it isn’t from someone who listens to the babblings of talk radio, and maybe his drinking buddies, and who has shown absolutely no ability to seek it on his own. Would you wish to debate this with Gen. Wesley Clark, or any of dozens of retired flag officers who OPPOSED the invasion of Iraq? Are THEY to be considered traitors and unpatriotic? And, is the whole world wrong, and only the U.S. right?-ED]

AND CONSIDER THIS: If you really want to stop killing, learn how to drive your car!  About 800 people are killed and several thousands severly injured EACH WEEK in this country ----- just driving in their
automobiles. Have you ever considered why the media don't focus on that???!!!  Now that's one helluva bunch of body bags every week, isn't it!  So if you really want to stop the killing and torture (yes torture of the automobile-wounded)focus on that which goes on here at home.
[Seems that every auto death IS reported in the local papers. Often in headlines on page 1. We are a country of 300 million, with extensive auto industry, run by oil. ANY auto death is tragic, but you can’t justify an immoral war on the basis that there are OTHER people who die in domestic auto crashes. Perhaps when 40,000 Americans a year die in Iraq, then you would be stating that there is comparability? More important, 50,000-100,000 deaths of non-Americans have already occurred in Iraq. While many are insurgents and guerilla fighters, many are innocent civilians caught by terrorist bombs and our military firepower. Whilke Saddam was evil, the terrorism we now see in Iraq was brought upon by the anarchy caused by American and British actions that were done not to protect America or England.—ED]

My conclusion is that the media and many/most college profs simply want to brainwash you for their own political end! [And, our conclusion at MWCNEWS is that you have shown NO evidence to support your claims, that you have made sweeping generalities, that you have not even looked at extensive documentation that is readily available, and often authored by Bush administration figures and former military and diplomatic upper-echelon officials. Are we all traitors? Are we all brainwashed? Do you have absolute wisdom to make the outrageous claims of brainwashing? Or, as we suspect, have YOU been brainwashed?—ED]

GITMO
Richard is right most people I know regard Guantanamo as a concentration camp, and it\'s a sick joke upon the land of the free. Regarding the lines: |Face one basic fact, we are hated by much of the world out of their jealousy of our rich way of life produced by just plain hard work and an abundance of basic resources.|You got the first part right, your reasoning is bad, and it is on record that the US wants to keep a tight reign on the Middle east oil producers . I must admit that the arrogance of some of the redneck apologist makes one feel sick to stomach, that such xenophobic clap trap is so common.
It is often said, that a persons
view of humanity is a reflection of self.
The US has meddled in the affairs of not just it\'s so called enemies , but also it\'s friends.
And sir you may feel righteous, and omnipotent, as a nation you are not, the US does need friends, and real friends will tell you the truth, not the politicians they will lie to you and feed the national ego.
Am I disgusted, with the rednecks and the US politicians, (they are danger to free world),
I am ! Am I jealous of the US NO! I feel a sad empathy for all the good folk of the US, and a sadness for the folks that have been brainwashed for so long by a cynical government.
Eugene you probably are going to hate me for this comment, but mate, I don\'t hate you.
