"When it set up the program, the CIA — at the urging of Vice President Cheney and a White House general counsel's office with an unconventional view of what constituted torture — asserted that it needed to hide prisoners in secret locations around the world and to harshly interrogate them to extract time-sensitive information about possible terrorists attacks."

George W. Bush --you remember him, he used to be president of the United States-- has gone on television to admit he authorized secret torture prisons run outside the American justice system. Now if this was Clinton, or just about anybody else, for that matter, they would already be hanging from a gibbet on the White House lawn.

Not so, Bush. CNN puts it this way:

"The CIA operates secret prisons abroad for holding key suspects in the war on terror, President Bush acknowledged Wednesday.

Though Bush said the United States never tortures suspects, "alternative" interrogation methods are used to glean information from them. These procedures "were tough, and they were safe and lawful and necessary," he said."

I bet if some guy in Dallas did this to somebody he held in his basement, the newspapers would call it torture, but why split hairs? Or nostrils. What matters is that Bush, and by extension everyone around him, is suddenly making the creepiest possible headlines that ought to give even the staunchest fuck-em-all jingoistic USAssholes pause to consider. They won't, but they ought to. Even the NY Times is reporting this news in a slightly less than favorable light (or they were, until the website suddenly vanished today-- way to go, guys).

The real question is, will he be able to dodge war crime type indictments when he leaves office? It's never happened to an American president before, but then, an American president has never revealed himself to be the love child of Darth Vader and Ed Gein before.

On top of this, there has been a wave of prominent headlines about how the rescue workers at 'Ground Zero', the parking area where the World Trade Center used to be, are all sick and dying and screwed, and of course the government is dragging its feet about taking responsibility for the proble, despite the absolute, ironclad evidence it is culpable for sending them in with paper masks and shovels when they should have been wearing space suits.

Soi miserable as this all is, it's fun to see Bush shitting his pants in public. Between him and Rumsfeld, somebody is doing some sword-falling. I think the Repugs have secretly demanded Bush be blamed for everything-- they are clearly prepared to sacrifice the top man at this point if it will improve their chances of political survival. His admissions of guilt reek of forced confession, something one normally associates with the CIA these days.
