After the defeat of Cornwallis at the Battle of Yorktown (October 19, 1781), the band is said to have played the Surreal British song “The World Turned Upside Down:”

"If ponies rode men and if grass ate the cows,
And cats should be chased into holes by the mouse,
If the mamas sold their babies
To the gypsies for half a crown;
If summer were spring and the other way round,
Then all the world would be upside down."

It must have seemed that way to the Brits after having just seen the mightiest empire of the world bested by a scruffy band of terrorists.

I often hum a few bars of that old tune as I observe all the daily absurdities of our own modern version of the world turned upside down. Of course the greatest absurdity is the way Americans blithely accept the most bizarre of these irrationalities without batting an eye.

To list just a few:

First and foremost is Global Climate Change. The more incontrovertible the evidence becomes, the fewer Americans believe it.

We wholeheartedly support the brutal Israeli government and refuse to even question their known crimes.

We accept, with no evidence, that Iran has a nuclear weapons program. This faith is equivalent to a similar belief in Iraq’s WMD.

We ignore the torture of America’s greatest war hero (Bradley Manning) and would like to get our clutches on Julian Assange for revealing our heinous war crimes.

Few object to our President’s assuming extrajudicial power over the life and death of American citizens or his insidious spy network.

And finally, the nearly most amazing topsy-turvy of all, is that supposedly rational Liberals believe every one of Obama’s faux-Progressive campaign lies. At least Romney is honest about what he wants to do to us. Watching the carefully positioned slack-jawed, dead-eyed American faces that provide the backdrop for the Democrat and Republican candidates’ speeches, I am hard pressed to decide which group looks dumber or more deluded.

Voters never suspect that the real purpose of the political clown show is to veil the real issue that, whoever wins this November, the 99% will lose and the capitalists will win:

“There is no daylight between Mitt Romney and Obama about the inner workings of the corporate state. They each will continue to funnel hundreds of billions of wasted dollars to defense contractors, intelligence agencies and the military.  Neither will lift a finger to help the long-term unemployed, those losing their homes, those filing for bankruptcy or college students’ debt. The charade of junk politics is there not to offer a choice but to divert the crowd while our corporate masters move relentlessly forward.” -Chris Hedges
