Three Buddhists have been shot dead by suspected Muslim insurgents in southern Thailand, police said.

Serm Mukmikul, 60, was killed in an ambush on Sunday while riding a motorcycle to a rubber plantation in Narathiwat province, said Phattarakorn Sriburin, a police major.

In Yala, Chom Yotsakul, 45, and Udom Rachakaew, 48, a brother and sister, were shot dead in a mountainous area, also while heading to a rubber plantation, police said.

Drive-by shootings and bombings occur almost daily in Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani, Thailand's three Muslim-majority provinces.

Violent insurgency

On Saturday, Thai police said a Buddhist and a teenage Muslim rebel were shot dead in recent violence.

Thai security forces shot dead a 15-year-old boy early Saturday in Yala province after he opened fire on a security outpost, police said.

In neighbouring Pattani province, a 53-year-old Buddhist was gunned down by suspected Islamic fighters while he was riding a motorcycle late Friday.

More than 2,000 people have died in violence related to an Islamic separatist insurgency that began in the majority Muslim provinces in January 2004.
