The War on The War on Terror

Ben Heine / MWC NEWS
Ben Heine / MWC NEWS
We are fighting a war in this country and it is not against terror.  It is against those who would presume to be fighting a war against terror on our behalf.  The widely touted “War on Terror” and our programmed obsession with national security are nothing more than cynically crafted smokescreens for the Neocon agenda, the advance of the Imperial Presidency, the subversion of our Constitution, the lining of the pockets of the administration cronies and the subjugation of the entire world under an American militaristic Imperialism.

I think it might be possible to trace virtually every action by our government since 9/11 to these and only these stealthy motivations.  Every time these agendas have diverged from the actual interests of true global and national security, their requirements always assume precedent.  Often this agenda is even advanced to the detriment of security.

This document does not advocate the use of illegal or violent means to attempt to undo the strategies of the neocon policymakers.  I do wish to point out here the myths, fabrications and lies that a pernicious administration abetted by a continuing docile opposition and a complicit media have allowed to become the new accepted wisdom.  We need to examine all the facile assumptions that have been fed us by those who would presume to program our national consciousness.  It is my assertion here that the whole “War on Terror” is a fraud of the first water and should be dispelled forthwith.

I am not asserting here that there is no such thing as terror in the world.  Where the disagreement comes is in an understanding of the root causes of such a phenomenon and an effective appropriate means for dealing with it.

In spite of what has been blasted at us from the speaker of every radio and the screen of every TV since 9/11, our freedoms and our obscenely high standard of living are only indirectly responsible for the rise of international terrorism.  World terrorism, first of all, is not some monolithic enterprise directed primarily at the United States by the “Islamo-fascists.”  Terrorism, even though universally condemned, may at least be rationalized after a fashion as the last resort of a brutalized group of people with no real options to resist a tactically superior oppressor possessing overwhelmingly greater resources.

We in this country have absolutely no idea of what terrorism is.  I hate to say it, but that is exactly the way the Republicans, the current administration and even most of the Congressional Democrats want it.  If you are going to set up a bugaboo to scare and control the ignorant and little children, it is best if they don’t know too much about your made-up phantom be he the old Russian Bear or a Tamil Tiger.  Unfortunately the biggest factor that stands in the way of any proper addressing of the issue of terrorism, domestic or international is our government itself.  We must awaken to the fact that our government (Republicans and Democrats) is not interested in any semblance of security for the American people.

We should make every attempt to ridicule the authorities and so befuddle them by means of false alarms, use of code words in your communications to flood the data mining equipment and other creative hoaxes that the system grinds to a halt. Please consult your attorney before attempting any such activities to determine their legality.

Some of you may say, “Won’t this foil some legitimate attempts at thwarting real terrorists?”   I hate to say this, but I don’t think anyone is actually doing anything substantive in this country to thwart terrorism, actual or imagined.  All the highly publicized raids and arrests of “terrorist cells” that are so widely proclaimed in front page headlines one week are quietly retracted on the back pages weeks later, if at all.

This administration is far more interested in spying on its critics and opponents than they are on thwarting terrorists.  Even the President in his last State of The Union address lied about the only four (four!) examples he could find of attempts to prevent terrorist attacks. I am willing to admit there are some sincere lower level officials who may actually buy into this “War on Terror” crap.  I can assure you none of the higher ups do.  That is why every citizen who still values his/her liberty must do everything to resist and destroy this “War on Terror” and completely discredit and hinder its advocates.

Due to the obscene uses to which 9/11 has been put, I truly wish the event could be exorcized from the collective American memory and never mentioned again!  There is no value in reminding ourselves of the tragic passing of our fellows on that horrible day if these events are to be continuously and unremittingly used as a psychic cattle prod to keep us all terrorized and compliant. The use of the constant recapitulation of the 9/11 mantra by cynical public officials and demagogues is the most profound desecration of the memory of the victims imaginable.

The reason I even bring this up is that I see a pretty clear pattern of behavior – a conspiracy of stonewalling, deceit and fraud that began prior to 9/11 and continued through all the “remedial” actions the “War on Terror” was supposed to effect in the world:  The Patriot Act, illegal wiretaps, rendition, torture, the war in Afghanistan, the war in Iraq and the present unobserved, unreported war in Iran.

The few members of the electorate that still held to some hope of change through the electoral process have now pretty much fallen back into the great unwashed millions who just don’t give the south end of a rat for politics. This leaves those of us who still possess a sense of outrage over the ham handed theft of our Republic and the destruction of the planet under the jack-boot of “American Democracy” with a damned small space in which to maneuver.

If a real Revolution is being planned and such organizing is indeed being done, it must be really deep, deep underground.  I am also surprised that more young Muslim-American men have not taken violent action against this government.  Is it possible that the lesson of the massacre of the Black Panthers is still remembered?  A couple of sting operations have netted some clueless, hopelessly inept young Muslims here and abroad.  If we must pin our hopes for revolutionary resistance to American Imperialism only on these totally misguided incompetents, we had better give up completely.

These men and women of the Bush Administration are not just your garden-variety second story burglars.  These are, to a man (and woman), deeply corrupt people for which no crime, no atrocity is too repulsive.  I know it is hard to keep this in mind when we are bombarded daily with pictures of them entertaining celebrities, kissing babies and distributing largess to ragged, photo-op unfortunates.  I hyperbole you not, these are mass murderers, thieves and liars of a magnitude that dwarfs human imagination.

It is equally impossible for me to countenance how anyone can continue to support in any way the greatest of their criminal enterprises: the War in Iraq.   In spite the constant flow of revelations of the illegality, immorality and complete impracticality of this war on any level of scrutiny, many people, including Congressional Democrats insist on arguing the incongruous rhetoric of “victory” as if we have any alternative to ignominious defeat.

It is so amazing to note that the same dunderheads that argued us into Vietnam then blamed those with the sense to leave for better or worse, rather than those who unwisely took over for the French in what was proclaimed in advance as a sure recipe for defeat and disaster.  Now this same idiot scenario is once again being played out in Afghanistan, Iraq and perhaps even Iran.

Before the banner of ‘We Support our Troops” even the most ardent pacifist wilts and cowers into silence.  Somehow the anti-war alternate, “We Support Our Troops – Bring Them Home Now!” just doesn’t cut it.   These mottos and slogans seem to hold us in the grip of a hypnotized spell that even those few of us who see the manipulation are incapable of breaking.  Few campaigns have been as pernicious or as effective as this campaign to support our troops.  Many have tried to vault between the horns of this dilemma, to run the tricky gauntlet of supporting the troops but not the war, only to be snagged by the paradox of confronting the fact that these soldiers, many (most?) of these men and women, are volunteers who either out of misguided manipulations, downright ignorance or even malice of forethought are deeply supporting this immoral, illegal mission willingly at the cost of their lives.

I assert that it is impossible to support the troops without supporting the mission. I find this position not unlike hypothetical arguments for supporting the child-soldier but not his atrocities, supporting the burglar but not the burglary, supporting the rapist but not the rape. Loving the sinner but not the sin?  I suppose someone of transcendent Buddhist persuasion could affirm the support of our troops as sentient beings always worthy of our compassion regardless of their behavior.  Of course then I would have to give the same support to the insurgents, el Qaeda, the Taliban and Tony Soprano.  I take no delight in the death of anyone, be he Saddam or PFC Smith, but I swear to you that I would rather see ten young American soldiers die than have the hair of one innocent Iraqi child harmed. I also know that, if I were not a pacifist and also not a devout physical coward and if I called Iraq my home, I would be doing my best to kill as many Americans as possible.

I suppose one could confront these soldiers and try to persuade them of the patent illegality and immorality of their enterprise.  Somehow I think that this would not be a very successful task.  Our energies can be better spent in attempting to dissuade young people from joining in the first place.  All attempts must be made to present the reality of what being a member of the military in this moment of US history fully means and especially how it can impact on the lives of these young people. If we could only cut the supply of cannon fodder in this conflict, it would not be necessary even to cut funding.  To my mind, this is one action that could actually bear fruit.

In conclusion then we must do everything possible to eradicate the mindset that our leaders, Democrat and Republican, have done to convince us that they have either the interest or the ability to insure our freedom or safety.  First of all our security is now wholly our own responsibility now that they have abdicated it.  In spite of what looks like some actual Congressional oversight in terms of domestic infringement of the administration into our liberties, the Democrats remain unable and sometimes even unwilling to rock the boat in terms of ether foreign policy or the mid-east wars of conquest.

This government has no desire to surrender its ill-gotten power in Iraq.  That is why there is only talk among the Democrats of “strategy” in Iraq not withdrawal.  Even in the chatter about “timed redeployment” there is never a mention of the permanent bases or any thought of abandoning our dominance of Iraq, our domination of its political system, its location or its oil.  Most of the leading Democratic presidential candidates like Hillary and Obama, et al – the ones that the DNC will finally determine are milquetoast enough to appeal to the mythical mainstream will never oppose the neocon plans for the mid-east or the world and never, never be critical of the government of Israel.

In the final analysis, I don’t think it is too much of an over simplification to say that the only people who are against this war and the occupation of Iraq are a majority of the American people and a majority of the Iraqi people who want us gone yesterday.  78% of Iraqis oppose the presence of coalition forces.  Most shocking of all is – a majority (51%) of Iraqis regarded the killing of US forces as acceptable – a reasonable reaction, all things considered.  ALL the Sunnis want every occupying American dead.

These figures reveal the truth that our government has as little concern for the wishes of the Iraqis we are pretending to liberate as it has for the liberty and safety of the American people. As I survey the current political landscape, the only people I can find who support and benefit from the continued conflict in Iraq and who will profit from our perpetual forced occupation of the mid-east are the majority of the two corrupt, complicit political parties in this country, the war profiteers, the oil companies, the torturers and other moral degenerates like (what I hope at the time of your reading this will be) the ex Attorney General - and al-Qaeda.

Each of us must look into his/her conscience and decide whom you identify with.  There is no longer any middle ground upon which to stand – no fence upon which to sit.  The words of the 1931 miners’ labor song: “Which Side Are You On?” resonates with new meaning and force.
