Pandering Fear

ImageOn 3 May 2007, the newswire produced "Chinese Navy 'expanding reach.'" This article was picked up by various news services, including the "left" network. I put left in quotes because it is a misnomer and it is utterly foolish as it is not at all interested in revolution or changing the status quo--except as it puts them on top.

There are many on this "left" who are neither socialist nor communist and tend to think for themselves. Left is a handy non-thought label raised up by the Right in order to generate fear and trembling. All mass labelings, however, are off base and dehumanizing.

The Chinese Navy article panders fear. . .and supports ignorance. That is why it was printed. It is propaganda. It is good politics as it keeps the present power-mongers in power. Via fear.

Let us look at this article for a moment to see how this works. . .not that this will make a difference, mind you, but to satisfy my arrogant self-importance and obvious intellectual superiority.

So.

"China is likely to expand its naval power in the coming years to take a more active role in securing global sea lanes vital to its burgeoning economy, a top naval commander in the Pacific has said." This is the opening sentence. The opening paragraph. Because American readers cannot masticate anything more complicated than a short paragraph. Long sentences mean lots of meat and thought. This sentence-paragraph is passed also off as a statement of fact.

But. . .this is a military man's opinion. A man filled with propaganda and fear and hatred for the enemy. It's been his life. Of course, there can be no bias here, no prejudice. He is an American. A Naval Commander. A warrior. A killer. A man whose life has been dedicated to seeing every and all others as, well, others.

That is, enemies. And then there is. . . Communism. A horrible, horrible thing that has been stalking us since 1917 (Russian Revolution). Communism. It led to, in the US, the union movement (gasp). Unions. Protection for--gag!--workers. But the idea of communism here is a very special communism, albeit applied liberally and freely to all forms of communism. One size fits all. It is the prejudice that comes from Russian communism.

Russian communism is a movement that is dedicated to taking over the world, to ending the rule of capitalism. It is unimportant that Chinese communism is a different animal altogether. Communism is communism. Just like niggers is niggers. Or spiks spiks. Or wetbacks wetbacks. Fucking goddamn immigrants.

Let's forget here that all of us "Americans" are immigrants. Raiders of the Unknown Ark. My family are older than most of my readers, having left France around 1642. We killed northerners and southerners and Injuns and stole horses and became Admirals. Like this "top naval commander." Top naval commanders are authorities. Who are we--you!--to question authority? Especially an authority who has devoted his life to defending you from. . .it's hard to say, as Americans are imprisoned by 1917 and Hitler.

To put it simply: the world is out to get you, America. Paranoia? Not in the least. As long as everyone is paranoid. Then, paranoia is status quo. It's not insanity. It's de rigueur . Rigor mortis.

Do the Chinese actually have a "navy"? Have they ever had a navy?

Well. . Genghis Khan had a navy and it tried to subvert Japan. It failed. And from this event we get "kamikaze," wind of the gods. Japanese fighter pilots during the latter days of WWII adopted this as their all-encompassing name and duty.

Before and during the early Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the Chinese "navy" explored the world in ships that put the Pinta, Niñ a and Santa Maria to shame. There is evidence that these inveterate sailors reached what is now known as South America . But they made no conquests. Just exploring.

Expanding trade. But the Ming emperor shut the country off from the outer world, as did Mao, who held this emperor--murderer of millions just because they didn't think as he did--up as his idol, did. The towering Chinese navy, commanded by a great general, was soundly defeated off the Shandong coast, just across the water from Port Arthur (now Dalian) in 19XX. What a navy! Now, in 2007, it's going to take over the world! It's going to take over sea lanes to ensure its continued hegemony! It's going to deprive Americans!

We have need of fear. Aiya!

Let's see. . .in American history, since the White Man, the Chinese have been abused and enslaved, albeit indentured. They it was who built the transcontinental railway. Then they became restaurateurs and launderers. They have inhabited and severely influenced perhaps half of the globe. Heavens to Murgatroid! It's a pandemic! It's an epidemic! The fucking communist yellow bastards are out to take over the world!

When it comes to a Communist, defense is offense. Aggression. Danger! Danger! Red alert red alert! Duck and cover!

Oh, yes. Since the closing down of the Ming Dynasty, the Chinese have had no navy of any note. Did I say that?

So this "top naval commander in the Pacific" is well within his rights, if I may so abuse a word, to cast fear to the winds and create a need for nationalism and the advancement of his career and the hatred of enemies. He cannot be faulted. After all, it is his job to support the going thing in US government or he'll have to retire.

Next!

"Rear Admiral James Kelly, the naval commander of US naval forces in Japan. . . ." Well! This gives him immense powers of perspicacity. He's in Japan. Image

The Japanese may not hate the Chinese as the Chinese hate them but they are nevertheless ruthlessly racist. It is of no consequence that this fits in with the American way of life. Racism. This military minded, propaganda-impugned, Japanized naval commander--an authority, let us not forget--sees " China developing a 'blue water navy' capable of projecting Chinese power well beyond its shores" and he's not even in China.

Let me ask you. . .why is it okay for America to protect itself with its blue water navy but not another country?

Okay. Foolish question.

"Kelly was speaking in the Australian capital, Canberra, where he is on a visit to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea in World War II."

This is paragraph five. All paragraphs being one sentence long. Each a statement of fact, however "yellow" or misleading. Australia is not--I repeat NOT an ally and parrot of American policy. So, Admiral Kelly's vociferations are not tainted by PC-ism. Oh, no no no! After all, he's an authority. Authorities are above such human pettinesses.

Lest we forget, we are working on pandering fear. Fear works from the backside, too, that is, by way of resurrecting history and paralleling the Chinese navy with the Imperial Japanese Navy that was out to conquer the world. Well, part of the world. That's enough, yeah? Remember The Alamo!

"Commenting on the expansion of Chinese naval power [sic] her [sic] said there was a heightened need for transparency between the world's navies 'so we don't have a misinterpretation of something out on the high seas.'

"'Things to come.'

"Last October's submarine incident was 'probably a sign of things to come,' he said."

Refer here back to paragraph #4--or #3, it's difficult to tell on a wire transfer. It happened last year, in 2006. My God! It's old news. Old news dug up from its rightful grave and waved, like dirty laundry, in public.

Let's discount the immense navy the US sent to the South China Sea for manoeuvers. . .or the navy in the Persian Gulf (why hasn't this been renamed the Iran Gulf since that's where it is?). Off the coast of Iran . Does Iran have a coast? Does it have a navy? Where's Persia?

I cannot go on. Such words as "likely" and "sees" and "probably" weigh heavily on the average everyday mindless American. Not to mention "Things to come." Right out of Night of the Living Dead! It's War of the Worlds all over again right here on planet Earth. On our doorsteps, if I'm not mistaken. Wasn't that doormat made in China ? The article goes on to note many more realistic and profoundly true truisms, such as "suspect" and "envision."

There is no need to go further. Let's go trout fishing in America. Or to Watermelon Sugar. Or even to The Pictorial Encyclopedia of Fashion when paranoid rationalization for nationalism and racism and fascism and hatred in general is needed. Perpetuation of the species is important.

What is important here is the pandering, how the writer or writers build their case based on the unknown, based on already existing prejudice and ignorance and the vague, undefined loss of something. If you can't name it, if you can't pin it down, it's frightening. It's. . .the unknown. This article is used as an example of how control is maintained on thoughtless America, people who do not question authority and believe everything they read, contrary to the cliché so popularly bantered about.

This isn't exactly yellow journalism, though the Left (ugh!) likes to use such pejorative writing. No. It's more akin to Monster from the Black Lagoon writing. Where did all the fear come from in Frankenstein (for those of us who actually read the book)? From Victor Frankenstein's use of the word "monster" and from his never stating just what it was that affrighted him in the first place.

When are people going to question what is put in front of them? When are Americans at home going to become like Americans in China sitting at the dinner table when the waitress brings in a new dish, announcing it in some barbaric better-to-be-forgotten language: "What's that?"

Thinking uses up calories. Americans are too fat.
