Cheney greeted by protesters in Vancouver

Protestors formed a human chain around the entrance shouting “shame, shame on you”Hundreds of protestors gathered at a speaking event by former U.S. vice-president Dick Cheney in his sold-out $500-a-plate appearance at the Vancouver Club in connection with last month’s release of his memoir, In My Time.

Protestors called on Vancouver police to arrest Cheney for torture, war crimes and crimes against humanity throughout his 8 years in the Bush administration.

Protestors formed a human chain around the entrance shouting “shame, shame on you” at guests and at the Vancouver police officers guarding the club entrance.

Some of the protesters held placards that read, "Cheney War Criminal," and "Torturer."

According to a source, few protesters were arrested by Vancouver police.

“If we can have a person like Dick Cheney indicted, that would slow down a lot of leaders planning illegal wars,” said Gail Davidson of Lawyers Against the War.

Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act states that any foreign national who has violated human or international rights can be barred from Canada.

Derrick O'Keefe, co-chair of the StopWar Coalition, said that many protesters are taking a stand against war crimes.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch also called on the Canadian government last week to prepare charges against Cheney for violating the United Nations Convention Against Torture.

Cheney’s visit to Vancouver was sponsored by Leah Costello, who is founder of the Bon Mot Book Club and a board member of West Vancouver EDA at the Conservative Party of Canada.
