Scores wounded in Egypt train crash

Train derails after crashing into concrete block on tracks south of Cairo, state media report.

Dozens of people were injured when a train derailed after crashing into a concrete barrier south of Cairo, Egyptian media reported.

Ambulances rushed to the scene early on Thursday to treat the wounded.

Deputy Health Minister Gamal Al Gohary told the Dot Masr website there were no deaths after the accident. He said 44 people had been injured and transported to Beni Suef Public Hospital.

The train collided with a concrete block that caused it to derail, lifting the front of one of the carriages several metres into the air, the government website al-Ahram reported.

Egypt's roads and railways have a poor safety record and Egyptians have long complained that governments have failed to enforce basic safeguards.

In early 2015, a crash between a train and a bus carrying schoolchildren northeast of Cairo killed at least seven people.

Fifty people, mostly children, were killed when a train slammed into a school bus as it crossed the tracks at a rail crossing south of Cairo in 2012.
