An explosion at a market in northern Afghanistan has left nine dead, including a local official.

The Monday morning blast took place inside a shop in a market in the Ghormuch district of northern Faryab province.

"Some explosive devices which were planted by terrorists in a shop in Ghormach district went off at rbout 10am local time today. As a result, nine civilians were killed on the spot," an interior ministry statement said.

The remote-controlled explosives were planted on a bicycle, according to police sources.

Faryab provincial council member Amanullah Shahabzai, who was sitting in front of a pharmacy in the market, was named among the dead.
