Palestinian teenager injured in clash

A Palestinian teenager has been seriously wounded in the head during clashes near the Atara checkpoint, north of Ramallah in the West Bank.

According to witnesses, 19-year-old Mohammed Taysir Abu Awad was hit by a tear-gas canister as a group of Palestinians were demonstrating in solidarity with Hana Al-Shalabi, a Palestinian hunger striker, earlier on Monday.

Abu Awad was taken to the Palestine Medical Compound in Ramallah, where he had emergency surgery.

Dr Ahmed Betawi, who works at the compound, said: "Abu Awad was shot by tear gas, his condition is serious, but stable."

The Israeli military said their soldiers responded to the protesters on Monday with "riot-dispersal means", not live fire, and that they were investigating the incident.

Several Palestinians and international activists have been struck by gas canisters fired at their heads in recent years.
